Dr. Charness was invited to write an editorial in a special issue titled “Technology in PA-LTC: Innovations and Applications” for the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association. His editorial “Promoting Effective Use of Technology to Support Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Facilities” reviewed PA-LTC (post-acute and long-term care) studies that focused on telehealth, robotics, and artificial intelligence in older adult care settings. He examined the methodological limitations and emphasized the need for robust randomized controlled trials and cost-effectiveness analyses. While acknowledging technology’s potential to improve the quality of life in PA-LTC, he concluded that many interventions remain unproven and encouraged further research and development in this field.
