A new CREATE research article, “Exploring artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistants to understand their potential to support older adults’ search needs,” is forthcoming in the journal Human Factors in Healthcare and is now available online.
The study was conducted as part of Project 3, which aims to assist older adults in managing their healthcare needs. Researchers across the CREATE sites explored the potential of virtual assistants powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in accessing reliable health information. They evaluated the capabilities of four widely used AI virtual assistants: Amazon Alexa, Bard, ChatGPT-4, and Google Assistant. They identified the effectiveness, accuracy, and usability for each AI assistant in responding to health-related inquiries. These findings provide insights into the strengths and limitations of each AI tool, offering recommendations for improving their design and functionality to support older adults better.
