A new open-access article, “Grand challenges of smart technology for older adults”, was published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction (February 26, 2025). This research examined the critical challenges older adults face when interacting with smart technology. Drs. Boot, Charness, Czaja, and Rogers contributed to this collaborative effort with nine other experts in aging and technology from around the world.

The article explored how smart devices, systems, and services can transform daily life for older adults. Smart technology offers benefits such as improved health monitoring and enhanced social connectivity. At the same time, there are critical obstacles, including usability issues, privacy concerns, and the digital divide. The authors stressed the importance of inclusive design and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure this technology is accessible, effective, and beneficial for aging populations. The authors called for continued research and innovation to bridge the gap between technological advancements and the real-world needs of older users.
