CREATE PI Dr. Wally Boot used travel to the recent American Psychological Association meeting in Washington, D.C. in August as an opportunity to meet with representatives from Congress to discuss the role of technology in the lives of older adults. Artificial intelligence is rapidly dominating the technological landscape, offering benefits but posing potential risks. Dr. Boot spoke with congressional staff about AI’s potential and pitfalls. While in D.C., he met with the offices of Senator Schumer and Senator Blumenthal. Upon returning to New York, he met remotely with the offices of Representative Nadler and Senator Gillibrand. Dr. Boot discussed how technology has increasingly been used to create convincing scams that often target older adults. On the other hand, he highlighted the work of CREATE and how AI tools can be developed to better serve older adults as they search for information and make complicated decisions about health and finances. These activities contribute to CREATE’s mission to engage lawmakers and raise awareness of issues affecting the lives of older adults with respect to technology.
